Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences is the Medical University of Karnataka based in Bangalore which has the geographic jurisdiction of the entire state of Karnataka and All the educational institutions of medical and health sciences in the state come under the purview of this University.

The academic scope of this University includes all types of health sciences such as Medical, Dental, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani, Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Speech and Hearing, Hospital management, Medical laboratory technology, Radiography etc… This University is the apex authority in Karnataka for affiliation, admissions, examinations, award of degrees and maintenance of the uniformity and standardisation of all the health related academic programs and degrees.

History
In1970s there was a phenomenal increase in the number of institutions and students admitted to various courses of medical and allied health sciences in Karnataka. This warranted an immediate need for regulation, monitoring and standardisation of the curricula as well as the evaluation system. In background the government of Karnataka, in 1976 took a bold and innovative decision to establish a single University of Health Sciences for the entire state. Later, even the Central Council of Health made a recommendation for the establishment of Health Universities in all the States. In 1994, the Government of Karnataka passed an Act to establish the University of Health Sciences and the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences was born. Thus a long cherished dream of having all the institutions of health sciences of Karnataka comes under one roof became a reality with the functioning of this University from 1st June 1996.

Campus
Currently Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences does not have a big green campus like Bangalore University. However, it is presently functioning from the camps of a government hospital.

Bangalore University - located on a sprawling 1100 acres of Jnana Bharathi campus and another huge City Campus is one of the largest universities of Asia and also one of the oldest Universities of India.

Five Star Status:
This university is a part of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and has the University Grants Commission (UGC) recognition. The degrees offered by this University are recognised world over. It is accredited by NAAC and has got the Five Star Status since 2001. Even otherwise, the Banalore University is noted as one of the leading Universities of the Country. The alumni of this University includes several great personalities like Nobel Laureate Sir C V Raman.

3rd Oldest University of Karnataka:
The Mysore University (1916) was the First University to be established in Karnataka. This was followed by the Karnataka University - Dharwad (1949) and the Bangalore University (1964).

Originally, the Bangalore University was an offshoot of the Mysore University, primarily to consolidate the institutions of Higher learning located in Bangalore and Kolar District.

Historically, the root of the Bangalore University is in the Central College which was started in 1886 by the British Government. It was then endowed with the University status on July 10, 1964 by the Government of Mysore State. Thus, the Central College and The University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) constituted the original institutions under the umbrella of this university and the Central College became the University Campus. But, in 1973, the University moved to the new Jnana Bharathi Campus located on 1100 acres of land. However, the historic Central College Campus even today remains as the City Campus of Bangalore University.

Though this University was originally intended to be a federal university, it eventually emerged as an affiliating University because of the Karnataka State Universities Ordinance of 1975.

Jnana Bharathi Campus:
At present, the Jnana Bharathi Campus houses the administrative office, a large number of post-graduate departments, Directorates, Centres of higher learning, Gandhi Bhavan, Ambedkar Bhavan, NSS Bhavan, Outdoor Stadium and other support services.

City Campus:
The Central College Campus retained as the city campus houses the main examination wing with the office of Registrar Evaluation, city offices of the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Finance (Examination part), Academic Staff College, Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education Centre, Directorate of College Development Council, a few postgraduate departments and support services. Besides, the college also has the Central College Cricket Pavilion where the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) was first established and trained several cricketers of International repute. In fact, Nobel Laureate Sir C V Raman announced his Scientific exploration in this prestigious Central College campus of Bangalore University.

Apart from this, in the vicinity of the city campus, the University has two constituent colleges, the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (U.V.C.E started in 1917). The third constituent college, the University College of Physical Education (formerly known as the Government College of Physical Education, started in 1959) is located in the JB Campus.

6 Faculties:
Academically, the university is structured into 6 faculties
1. Arts
2. Science
3. Commerce and Management
4. Education
5. Law
6. Engineering.

It has 41 post-graduate departments, one post-graduate Centre at Kolar, (started during 1994-95), three constituent colleges, 473 affiliated colleges (of which 88 have PG courses) and several other Centers and Directorates of higher learning and research under its purview. The University offers 51 Post-graduate courses. (Note: These numbers may have changed since 2007.)
